Holiday Closure Notice

In observance of Thanksgiving, our clinic will be closed on November 28 and 29. We will resume our regular hours on December 2. If you need to schedule appointments or request prescription refills, we encourage you to do so ahead of time. Taking care of your health is important, and we want to ensure all your needs are met before the holiday festivities begin.

Embracing a Healthy Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a wonderful opportunity to gather with loved ones, share delicious meals, and create lasting memories. However, it’s also a time when healthy habits can take a backseat. This year, we invite you to incorporate wellness into your celebrations. To help you enjoy a happy and healthy Thanksgiving without sacrificing the joy of the holiday, we’ve put together some tips we think you’ll find helpful.

Start with Gratitude, Not Hunger

Before the feast begins, take a moment to express gratitude. Reflecting on what you’re thankful for can set a positive tone for the day. This mindfulness practice can also help you slow down and savor your meal, making you less likely to overeat. By starting with a grateful heart, you become more present and can fully enjoy the company and the food even more.

Mindful Eating

Thanksgiving meals are often abundant, featuring a variety of dishes that we look forward to all year. It’s perfectly okay to enjoy your favorite foods, but remember to listen to your body’s cues and eat in moderation. Here are some tips for practicing mindful eating during your Thanksgiving feast:

  • Fill Your Plate Wisely: Start by filling half your plate with non-starchy vegetables like green beans, Brussels sprouts, or salad. These are rich in nutrients and fiber, helping you feel full.
  • Lean Proteins First: Opt for lean proteins like turkey breast. Proteins can help regulate your appetite and provide sustained energy.
  • Smaller Portions of Heavier Dishes: Enjoy smaller servings of dishes like mashed potatoes, stuffing, and casseroles. This way, you can taste everything without overindulging.
  • Savor Each Bite: Take the time to chew thoroughly and appreciate the flavors. Eating slowly gives your body time to recognize when it’s satisfied.
  • Pause Before Seconds: Wait a few minutes before going back for more. You might find that you’re already content.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water throughout the day aids digestion and overall well-being. Sometimes, we mistake thirst for hunger. By staying hydrated, you can better regulate your appetite and avoid unnecessary snacking. Try to drink a glass of water before the meal and continue sipping throughout the day.

 Stay Active

Incorporating physical activity into your Thanksgiving can make the day even more enjoyable. Movement helps boost your mood and energy levels. Here are some fun ways to stay active during the holiday:

  • Family Walk: Suggest a leisurely walk around the neighborhood after the meal. It’s a great way to spend quality time together while aiding digestion.
  • Play a Game: Organize a friendly game of football, soccer, or even a backyard obstacle course. Activities like these can become cherished family traditions.
  • Morning Exercise: Start your day with a short workout or yoga session. This sets a positive tone and can help manage stress.

Manage Stress

The holiday season can be both joyous and stressful. Planning meals, hosting guests, and coordinating schedules might feel overwhelming. To fully enjoy the festivities, it’s important to manage stress effectively:

  • Set Realistic Expectations: Remember that perfection isn’t the goal. Focus on the joy of being together rather than the details.
  • Take Breaks: If you start feeling anxious, take a few minutes to breathe deeply or step outside for fresh air.
  • Delegate Tasks: Share responsibilities with family members. Cooking and preparation can be more fun when everyone contributes.
  • Stay Present: Focus on the moment. Engage in conversations and enjoy the company of those around you.

Desserts in Moderation

Sweet treats are a delightful part of Thanksgiving. To enjoy desserts without overindulging, consider these tips:

  • Small Portions: Take a small slice or a few bites of your favorite dessert to satisfy your craving.
  • Choose Wisely: If there are multiple options, pick the one you love the most.
  • Mindful Enjoyment: Eat slowly and savor the sweetness. This can make a small portion feel more satisfying.

Tips for Navigating Holiday Gatherings

The holidays are filled with social events and gatherings that often revolve around food and drink. To help you maintain your wellness goals during these occasions, here are some additional tips:

  • Eat Before You Go: Having a small, healthy snack before attending a gathering can prevent overeating.
  • Bring a Healthy Dish: Contribute a nutritious option to the meal. This ensures there’s something you can enjoy without guilt.
  • Limit Alcohol Intake: Alcohol can add extra calories and lower inhibitions, leading to overeating. Drink in moderation and alternate with water.
  • Focus on Socializing: Engage in conversations and activities. Shifting the focus away from food can enhance your enjoyment of the event.
  • Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to feelings of hunger and fullness. It’s okay to say no to seconds or decline dessert if you’re satisfied.

The Importance of Self-Care

Amid the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it’s essential to prioritize self-care. Taking time for yourself can improve your mental and physical health. Here are some ways to practice self-care during the holiday season:

  • Get Enough Sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night to help your body recover and reduce stress.
  • Practice Relaxation Techniques: Activities like meditation, deep breathing exercises, or gentle stretching can promote relaxation.
  • Stay Connected: Reach out to friends and family, especially if you can’t be together in person. A phone call or video chat can lift spirits.
  • Set Boundaries: It’s okay to say no to events or requests that feel overwhelming. Protecting your time and energy is important.

Staying Motivated After the Holidays

Once Thanksgiving has passed, it’s common to feel a dip in motivation. To keep your wellness journey on track, consider these strategies:

  • Set Realistic Goals: Outline achievable objectives for the remainder of the year and the upcoming New Year.
  • Reflect on Successes: Acknowledge the healthy choices you’ve made and the progress you’ve achieved.
