How Telomere Testing Can Benefit You

Fatigue/Stress, Testing

Have you ever wondered why you look older or younger than your friends? Even if you are the same age as another person, you both are genetically designed to age at different rates. Cellular turnover and cell regeneration play a significant role in how quickly you may age. Telomere testing evaluates the quality of your telomeres, which will predict the quality of your cells’ health.

What are telomeres?

Telomeres are designed to act as the protective ends of DNA. They are a cap on the chromosome and act as a buffer for your genetic material to prevent chromosomes from becoming attached to each other. If a cell were to divide without telomeres, they could lose necessary information from the end of the DNA. Each time a cell replicates, the telomeres become shorter until there isn’t enough protection. At this point, the cell dies.

What is my telomere score?

Your telomere score tells you the average length of your telomeres. Telomere length is one of the best scientific methods to test biological age, and repeated analysis of telomere length is a good indicator of how quickly a person ages.

What causes a low telomere score?

An inflammatory diet, or one that increases oxidative stress, will shorten telomeres faster. An inflammatory diet includes refined carbohydrates, fast foods, processed foods, sodas, artificial sweeteners, trans fats, and saturated fats.

How can I improve my telomere score?

  • Reduce oxidative stress
  • Correct micronutrient deficiencies
  • Exercise
  • Correct insulin levels

How will improving my telomere score make me feel?

Improving your telomere score is an important aspect of an all-inclusive, healthy lifestyle that will help you feel happier and healthier. People who take steps to change their telomere score will notice benefits that will improve the quality of their life, including:

  • Increased energy
  • Better sleep
  • Improved cardiovascular health
  • Lower risk for diabetes
